Christ applies Jonah’s experience to Himself, and teaches that it too, was a type of His death. In conclusion, all sacrifices of the Old Testament, which were first slaughtered, pointed to the death of Christ. Secondly, Christ chose to die in such a way for our benefit and for our sake, and for many reasons. For since He took our sins upon Himself, He therefore also had to take upon Himself the punishment for our sins, namely death, for sin’s wage is death, so that thereby a satisfaction could take place for the righteousness of God, since God the Lord had said to man in Genesis 2, “The day you eat from the forbidden fruit, you will die.” This command of God could not be broken. Accordingly, we should have died the eternal death; thus Christ had to give Himself into death for us as St. Paul says, “Christ gave Himself up for the sake of our sin,” (Rom. 4) and in Hebrews 9, “So it is set for man to die one time, but after that the Judgement: Thus Christ offered Himself up one time to take away many sins.” In Matthew 26, Christ says that He sheds His blood for the forgiveness of sins, and once again in Mark 10, that “He gives His life as a ransom for many.” (An Explanation of the History of the Suffering and Death of Our Lord Jesus Christ; Gerhard, Johann, Repristination Press, 1999, p. 287.)

Prayer : O Lord Jesus Christ, may Your thirst which you endured on the cross quench the thirst of my soul and protect me through Your atoning sacrifice, which You accomplished on the cross, may it be a comfort to my soul; give me grace that my soul thirst for You, the Fountain of Life; and, grant that I may commend my soul into Your hands at the hour of death. Amen.

However, the forty days of Lent are to help us prepare for the events of Holy Week, Good Friday and the celebration of our Lord’s Resurrection.

As we humbly reflect on our thoughts, words and deeds, which are tainted with sin, we do well to meditate on these words from Paul Gerhardt’s beautiful Holy Week hymn; (LSB 453): “Who is it Lord, that bruised You? Who has so sore abused You? And caused You all Your woe? We must all make confession, of sin and dire transgression, while You no ways of evil know.”

This verse reminds us of the words of the prophet Isaiah described the world’s Redeemer, Jesus Christ, that “He was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed. All we like sheep have gone stray; we have turned—every one—to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.” (Isaiah 53:4-6)

Recognizing our Lord’s great sacrifice for us and our salvation, use this season of Lent to focus on your Lord’s love for you. Take time to daily focus more on His Words and joyfully strive to live according to them, as the words of Gerhardt’s encourage, “Your cross I place before me; its saving power restore me, sustain me in the test. It will, when life is ending, be guiding and attending, my way to Your eternal rest.” Therefore, rejoice in Jesus’ victory over sin, death and the devil, won for us on the cross as we await the celebration of Our Lord’s resurrection.

A Note from Pastor (Feb 2026)

This month begins the annual season of reflection and repentance in preparation for Holy Week, Good Friday and Easter. According to the Treasury of Daily Prayer, “During the forty days of Lent, God’s baptized people cleanse their hearts through the discipline of Lent: repentance, prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Lent is a time in which God’s people prepare with joy for the Paschal Feast (Easter). I...

It is a time in which God renews His people’s zeal in faith and life. It is a time in which we pray that we may be given the fullness of grace that belongs to the children of God” (Treasury of Daily Prayer, CPH 2008).

Consider this from Luther's Smalcald Articles III III 3, concerning repentance: This is what true repentance means. Here a person needs to hear something like this,“You are all of no account, whether you obvious sinners or saints in your own opinions. You have to become different from what you are now. You have to act differently than you are now acting, whether you are as great, wise, powerful, and holy as you can be. Here no one is godly.” But to this office of the Law, the New Testament immediately adds the consoling promise of grace through the Gospel. This must be believed as Christ declares,“Repent and believe in the gospel.” (Mark 1:15)

For your prayers, the Collect for Ash Wednesday (Feb. 18):
"Almighty and everlasting God, You despise nothing You have made and forgive the sins of the penitent. Create in us new and contrite hearts that lamenting our sins and acknowledging our wretchedness we may receive from You full pardon and forgiveness; through Jesus Christ, Your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen."
