The Declaration of Independence begins with these words, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” With great humility, we thank the Holy Trinity for His “first article gifts” that help us to pursue Life, Liberty and Happiness. But we are not at liberty to pursue our own “happiness” at the expense of others. These gifts are given to serve our neighbor, because we must also acknowledge that all men are sinful and equally in need of a freedom far greater than any human government or document can provide. We hold this to be self-evident, that all men need to be set at “liberty” from sin, death and the power of the devil by God Himself. A freedom that only Christ can provide to those who hear the Gospel and believe. Having experienced this freedom, St. Paul reminds us ‘For though I am free from all men, I have made myself a slave to all,’ (I Cor. 9:19), Luther wrote about our freedom and service to others two hundred and fifty years before the Declaration of Independence, stating that “A Christian is an utterly free man, lord of all, subject to none,” but that, “A Christian is an utterly dutiful man, servant of all, subject to all.”  (On the Freedom of the Christian, 1520). Therefore, use your God given gifts of life, liberty and pursuit of happiness to love and support your neighbor as God has called us to do even as we thank and praise Him for our nation and our independence.

MARCH FOR LIFE: All members of IDW congregations are invited to participate in the Iowa March for Life on Saturday, June 20. The day begins at Trinity Lutheran Church in Des Moines (3223 University Ave.) with a Matins Prayer Service at 9:00 a.m., followed by worship at 10:00 a.m. A lunch will be served at 11:00 a.m. After lunch, participants will travel to the Iowa State Capitol for the March, beginning at noon. All are encouraged to come, pray, worship, and walk together as witnesses for life.

YOU’RE INVITED: to a hymn festival celebrating the centennial of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Marshalltown. It will be held on Sunday, June 21st at 4pm with a meal to follow.

SINGLES RETREAT AT OKOBOJI: The fourth annual Lutheran singles retreat at Camp Okoboji will be held August 21-23. Ages 21-41 are invited. Registration cost is $100 and you can register at faithwinterset.org. Contact KeithLCMS@gmail.com with questions.

SENIOR ORGAN RECITAL: The members of Holy Cross are invited to attend the Senior Organ Recital of Joshua Feldt on Tuesday, May 12th at 7:30 pm. Visitation for Pauline is scheduled for Thursday night from 5-8 pm.  Funeral will be at the church at 10:30 am on Friday, followed by a luncheon. The internment will be at Sunset Gardens at 1:00 pm.

FURNITURE PURGE: The Board of Education is removing some furniture from the classrooms (chairs, table, cabinet, bench). Furniture is located in the middle classroom and marked with a painter’s tape 'X'.  It is available for members to take before May 3.  After that time, it will be donated or placed on the curb for Carlisle clean-up week. Talk to Kathy Dee with any questions.

APRIL SHOWERS: In honor of the gift of new life God bestows on His people, we are celebrating with April Showers, both in our community and congregation.
1.Bring baby supplies to the church to support Aggie’s Closet and the life affirming work at Guiding Star pregnancy center in Marshalltown. (Suggested donations: Diapers, wipes, onesies, diaper cream, bottles, pacifiers, teethers, baby wash, etc)
2.Write a note of encouragement to one of the new and expecting moms in our congregation and place it in the corresponding manila envelope. If you would like to write a note to another mom in the congregation, make sure it is labeled and it will be delivered to them!

CCA FOOD PANTRY: The CCA Food Pantry is currently serving 13+ families in the PEACH (Palmyra, Easter Lake, Avon Lake, Carlisle, Hartford) area.  The food pantry is open on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of the month and anyone in the PEACH area can fill 2-4 bags with food, plus paper goods and bathroom items.  Holy Cross has been the location for the CCA food pantry since the 1980's.  Check the list posted on the Food Pantry door for immediate donation needs.  Please ask Kathy Dee if there are any questions or for opportunities to get involved.  

WEEKLY BACH CANTATAS: Lutheran Public Radio streams an appointed Bach Cantata uninterrupted at 1 pm and 8 p.m. Central on Sundays.  This week’s cantata will be BWV 103 “You Will Weep and Wail.”  You can listen at lutheranpublicradio.org.

TODAY: from 12:30-4pm is the annual food sorting for the CCA Food Pantry. The Boy Scouts canvas the towns in the PEACH area for food donations and a group of Holy Cross (and other family and friend) volunteers spend a few hours sorting the food by date and getting it organized on the shelves to serve the community for the next year. We appreciate everyone who has helped in the past and look forward to doing it again this year. All ages are welcome! Feel free to come and go as you are able. Please ask Kathy Dee if there are any questions.

IOWA MARCH FOR LIFE: On June 20, 2026 we will gather at Trinity Lutheran Church in Des Moines for a time of prayer, encouragement, and fellowship before heading to the State Capitol for the rally at noon and the march at 1:00 p.m. Please RSVP by emailing pastorckroonblawd@gmail.com with the number of people in your household who plan to attend so that adequate lunch preparations can be made.

BOOK OF 2 TIMOTHY BIBLE STUDY: The Word of the Lord Endures Forever is a daily 15-minute verse-by-verse Bible study produced by Lutheran Public Radio in Collinsville, IL and hosted by LCMS Pastor Will Weedon. Pastor Weedon recently started a study on the Book of 2 Timothy. You can listen on-demand at thewordendures.org.

"But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about those who are asleep, that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope.  For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep."  (1 Thessalonians 4:13-14)

Shirley Havens fell asleep in Christ on Sunday, April 12. The funeral service for Shirley will be held at Holy Cross on Saturday, April, 18 at 2:00 pm. A reception will follow the graveside service. Visitation will be Friday evening from 4:00 to 8:00 pm.

Everyone is encouraged to attend and hear the Good News of our risen Savior which give us hope for those who have fallen asleep in Him.
